I have the best husband in the world
The mail came late yesterday, so I didn't get it until this morning. In it, I found a package sent by [info]earthenwood. It contained a small box and a note from Ferrett instructing me to retrieve a letter hidden in the house.

The letter left me with tears streaming down my face. It explained that during each of the six weeks he is gone, a beautiful piece of art will arrive in the mail. It's a token of his love, a reminder of how much I mean to him during this time when he is so busy and expanding his horizons so vastly.

Within the box was this goddess elemental tile:

It's beautiful, and I'm already considering how to mount it. Of the goddess elemental tiles Melanie makes, he chose air because of the wings. He gives me wings so I can fly.

The ribbon tying the box is a work of art itself:

The ribbon is a lovely green and brown cording, and the pendant is a spiral goddess:

I am wearing it now, a reminder of the love that my sweet weasel has for me. I am a lucky, lucky woman.

    Solar panels
O omniscient LJGenie, who bends over for no petroleum conglomerate:

Today's Opus strip has me thinking quite seriously on the subject of solar panel installation --specifically, for purposes of offsetting the monthly electricity bill. Anyone out there have info on how to set such a thing up? The usual Google and Yahoo searches aren't exactly turning up hard practical data, only vaguely-worded sales pitches.

Fourth Acorn Music & Verse this Saturday, July 12!
    [cross-posted to [info]filkhaven, [info]shadowriderhope, [info]stilyagiaircorp and [info]penguicon]

The Third "Acorn Music and Verse" housefilk will be held this Saturday, July 12 from 1:00 pm into the evening at the Great Oak Cohousing Common House, 500 Little Lake Drive, Ann Arbor, MI 48103. (Please park at the side of Little Lake Drive, and not in the parking lot - there is very limited parking available for residents).

This is the direct descendant of the "Fen and Filk" house sings at Glimmerglass house, and they are always a good time. Let me know ASAP if you need crashspace, so I can make sure there is space is available!

It's a fun, inviting get-together where you will always get a turn to sing, recite a poem, or ...? (and you can pass if you want), and new people are welcome and encouraged. :) You can show up any time during the event, and leave at any time. Our schedule is to arrive at 1:00, get singing by 2:00, break for pizza around 5:00, and then sing till usually 8:00-ish. Often there is a musical jam that continues well after the 'end' of the event, so feel free to stick around if you're interested!

It's a friendy, non-judgemental place to start singing, playing, or reciting in front of people, and a fine spot to test out your new songs. We welcome instrumental musicians and spoken word performance as well. There is a kid-friendly play room next to the dining hall where we play, and kid-friendly play equipment outside if the weather is nice.

    Hosted by [info]shadowriderhope and [info]nubianamy.
    Supported by [info]qnvhrtz & [info]peteralway.

Come prepared to participate - song or word....... ! Bring friends....

Bring a snack, a dish to share, etc.....what food & drink we have is whatever we bring. There is most likely going to be a pizza order.

We hope to arrange a group call to Tom Smith [info]filkertom to wish him well and sing him a song, as he can't be there with us physically - he's recuperating in a rehab facility after a badly torn quad at a Christine Lavin concert.

There's a great Tom Smith Fundraiser album that's being put together by Rob Balder and DJ Particle and many others - I encourage you to check it out and help out this fine master filker and friend. :)

Who's next for going through the clothes I've shrunk out of & just plain don't wear anymore?

Clothes are mostly size 16/18. Shoes are size 8 - 8-1/2. First to get to where the clothes are (my house) gets first choice.

    Midnight duck feeding - delightful!

I made a website! It is sweet! Way cooler than the other (2) traveling trainers in the area! It is not quite finished but almost.

I have new brightly colored plates and cups because J is weird, but thoughtful.

I have a training session and sword class in a little while, meantime I am messing with the website and cleaning the apartment and organizing my new trainer crap and stuff.

    I ate pizza for breakfast.

So far, a good day. :)

Advice on similar Dell laptop models
Dear LJ Genie, who knows his way around computers and is the smartest consumer of all,

I am looking to buy a laptop computer. I'm a research student, and this computer will see a lot of daily commute. Most of the programs I need to run are standard Microsoft Office stuff, though I do occasionally watch videos on my computer. I have a record for wrist inflamations ("tennis elbow", carpal tunnel syndrome, etc.) and eyes that tire quickly, so a good monitor and a comfy keyboard are a must. As for net-access, this computer is going to see 2-3 different connection profiles, from the Uni connection (utilizing a cable) to wireless at home. (I intend to use WinXP, so Vista compatability is not an issue.)

I narrowed my list down to two Dell models. (They're cheaper and give a longer warranty period.) One of them is Inspiron 1525 15.4" and the other is a Latitude D530 15". They have identical processor speed and hard drive size and very similar weight. I'm currently using this exact model of Inspiron from my current workplace, so I know the monitor is gorgeous and the keyboard comfy, but i've no idea how it travells. )

There are several technical differences between the two models. Some i'm pretty sure don't matter to me, but the others might. They're listed below, )

Do you, oh wise LJ Genie, know:
    (1) How well does either of these models travel?
    (2) Will any of the technical differences matter, for my needs?
    (3) How comfy is the Latitude in terms of keybaord and screen?
    (4) Anything else I should be aware of before making a decision?

    Sunday morning comin' down
Since finishing my big project, and completely exhausting myself in the process, my sleep pattern has been totally whacked. I slept all day Friday, slept in late yesterday, and then collapsed yesterday afternoon and slept into the evening. So now I've been up all night because I couldn't sleep. Despite the vague tug of sleepiness now, I'm staying up all day and getting to bed at a decent hour so I can get myself back on schedule.

I also have to confess a serious fall off the bandwagon. I discovered the free games on yahoo, and they have been eating my life. I am such a junkie. Oy. Must stop playing them as of today. I have no self control.

So, on my feet to do something productive, like clean up around the house. I must get back on schedule of being my usual organized self as of tomorrow, and that will be easier with a clean house.

    burning downloaded games to cd?
    dear LJ genie:

i have an account with bigfish games, and have purchased and downloaded a number of games. i am interested in burning them to cds and playing them from the cds, rather than having them on the hard drive. i contacted big fish and they told me this is not possible, but i wonder if they just have to say that so people aren't bootlegging the games all over the place. i am not interested in giving the games i have purchased to anyone else; i just want to have copies of them on cd. barring the ethical questionability of this procedure, is it actually possible?

    thanks in advance!

    Vista & importing pictures
Hello all knowing computer genie, I am working on a Vista computer and I would like some help.

I have uploaded pictures from my iphone, and that worked great, well now I am trying to use the "internal" card reader on my computer to upload pictures from my digital camera, WELL it works fine, but it sends those pictures to the previously used iphone folder.

My question is, is there a way to change it so that it doesn't automatically go to that folder? I can't seem to find it, I am still kind of new with Vista.

    Thank you!

    Pagan PSA
Many of you have probably already heard about the remark that Kathie Lee Gifford made regarding pagans. But her "apology" is even more appalling. The program segment in which the apology occurs is a painfully trite 11+ minutes of babbling, within which there are two "apologies," each one more insulting than the one before. If you can tolerate watching it all the way to the end, her final remarks are incredibly insulting, remarks that demonstrate an arrogant disregard for anyone who would object to the words tripping from her golden tongue.

If you wish to make your voice heard on this issue, you can call the Today show producer at (212) 664-4249, press 1, and then ask to speak to Jim Bell. Or you can email Today@NBC.com. My only request is that you express your anger in intelligent and polite terms - do not fall to their level of discourse because it only gives them an excuse to disregard our complaints.

Here is the YouTube link to the remarks by Kathie Lee Gifford regarding pagans:

On trained impulses, and false positives.
Ever been out with one of your childbearing friends who is taking a baby-free night for dinner and socializing? Ever seen what happens if someone in the restaurant has a crying baby? Ever watched them be almost physically unable to relax until someone quiets the noise?

I'm conditioning myself to be like that for IV beeping. But less than 1/6th of the IVs on the floor are mine, at any given time. Oy. (:

    June 2008 Books
    1. Astropolis: Earth Ascendant by Sean Williams - Another solid future space tale by Williams. Let's hope he's learned how to write a proper ending by now.
    2. Blood Noir by Laurell K. Hamilton - The Anita Blake book before this showed signs of diminished sex and more attention to story. This one does show a bit more sign of advancing the various plots, but not yet enough. Can Hamilton get her mojo back?
    3. Grantville Gazette IV by Eric Flint - The 1632 Universe is just a lot of fun to read vignette stories about, and I bet it fun to write them too. Just good, fun, enjoyable storytelling all round.
    4. Night Child by Jes Battis - Another new author cranking our urban fantasy with a dash of romance. Not great, not bad, let's see if it develops.
    5. One For The Money by Janet Evanovich - The first book on the Stephanie Plum series. Not SF or Fantasy, just a series of novels about the adventures of a former lingerie buyer turned bounty hunter, and her somewhat befuddling attempts to learn the business. Cute enough to warrant looking at the second book. Recommended by a friend who's slightly cuter than the series heroine.
    6. Spectre: a Zoe Martinique investigation by Phaedra Wilson - Urban fantasy / horror and second in a series. Wilson's hitting her stride with this, it's both a big improvement over the first book and a real attention getter. I look forward to more of these.
    7. Daemons Are Forever by Simon R. Green - The sequel to "The Man With The Golden Torc". Green writes reliably frothy fantasy, and this is no exception. Sort of like popcorn for the mind.
    8. Valor's Trial by Tanya Huff - Latest in Huff's Confederation series. Solid SF adventure, even if her heroine has a slightly less than believable tendency to be there for every major event in the galaxy.
    9. Two For The Dough by Janet Evanovich - Second in the Stephanie Plum series. This one provides a good number of laugh out loud moments. I'll go for the next, too.
    10. Stealing Light by Gary Gibson - Someone stop Gibson before he writes again! This book may have been the worst waste of time I've indulged in in ages. Not because it was bad, no, it was reasonably well written, set up some intrigueing premises, and kept the story moving along. The problem was the ending, or lack thereof. After the end, nothing was changed, nothing had been altered, and absolutely NOTHING that any of the characters did within the story has any meaning whatsoever. Just WHAT was the point?
    11. Holy Smoke by Katie MacAlister - Latest in the Aisling Grey, Guardian series. If Simon Green writes popcorn, then MacAlister's stuff is best thought of as cotton candy. Fluffy, attractive, light and frothy, and ultimately without any real substance.
    12. Identity Theft and Other Stories by Robert J. Sawyer - Solid but not particularly inspired short story collection from a solid and reliably competent SF author.

Didn't go out for the 4th. Just... really not in the mood. Probably should have, supposed to be social and all. Been pretty off in that regard for the last week or so. Too tired of strife, interpersonal and personal. Feels better to hide a bit. Bah, whatever. Lots of fireworks sounds coming in from outside.

I cleaned the fishbowls. The fish are happier, I think. Or maybe I can just see them better.

[info]tatternym thinks my consolation business name sucks and is not wrong. Back to the drawing board, sort of. There are two possibilities in the lead. I want this hurdle past me soon. It's a barrier to a bunch of moving-forward stuff in my head. That whole names have power thing. For me at least, they definately do.

Tomorrow is my personal training appointment with the exhorbitantly expensive people who are going to try their darnedest to sell me a package while I'm doing my darnedest to learn as much as I can and get out the door. I hope none of that backfires completely.

Hmm. Book and bed, I think.

    Help My Clarionites, Dude!
Over at Clarion West, the students are being taught by such luminaries as Connie Willis and Cory Doctorow. I think of them when I have the time to breathe, because they're undergoing what we are, on a whole different letter.

So it came as somewhat of a blow to discover some asshole broke into their house this weekend and stole four of their laptops. You can't do Clarion if you're not laptopped, but they only have limited time to get them replaced, and they can't afford to replace them straight away. (Details, such as they are, are related by the divine Cherie M. Priest.)

Things are chaotic right now, but if there's anything you can do, please contact either Leslie or Neile at info at clarionwest.org - some sort of PayPal campaign is in the works, but God knows what's happening right now. And please, link not this post, but Cherie's, around: I'll be running amuck here at Clarion, I'm too busy to update it as news comes in.

Unfortunately, unless one of y'all can do something to help, those poor people at CWest are gonna have too much spare time on their hands.

    Oh, And Thank You
So I was up until 2:30 last night and then up at 6:30 this morning, and I had class until noon, and then suddenly I was like, "Oh, right, my birthday was yesterday, wasn't it?"

Thanks so much for the flood of well-wishes and kindness. I've got at least twenty e-cards in my queue and fifty people to respond to, and that makes me feel good. And if I don't get back to you before Saturday or Sunday, well, I've barely been on the Internet. But it did make me feel warm and fuzzy, and it did give me a connection back home, and I love y'all.

Now I am napping at 1:30, hoping I can get enough snoozing for some Werewolf and some fresh beer tonight.

Yesterday was amazing, but I'll have to get (and post) the pictures first. Jesus, San Diego is pretty.
